Editorial notice. We tested 8 AI character creators with fresh accounts for 21 days, 20-40 minute sessions per platform. We designed 3 different characters on each: (1) functional character (assistant with personality), (2) artistic character (OC for narrative roleplay), (3) affective character (girlfriend/companion style). We measured: (1) creation freedom (how many fields you actually control), (2) character coherence after 20 messages, (3) visual quality of the associated image, (4) optional NSFW when requested, (5) real monthly price for sustained use. We describe capabilities, not content: no long chat excerpts in this article, no explicit content, no attached real images. All users are over 18. Prices and limits = September 2026.

TL;DR — AI character creator in 30 seconds

  • What it is: a tool that lets you define a complete character from scratch (name, appearance, personality, backstory, voice, first message) and then chats with you while maintaining that identity across long sessions. Some also generate the initial image automatically.
  • What it isn’t: neither a generic chatbot without identity (GPT-4 without character), nor an avatar generator (which only creates the image and stops there), nor an enterprise chatbot builder (ManyChat, Landbot).
  • The most complete for functional + affective character in 2026: Candy AI — 8/8 customisable fields, automatic image that respects the prompt, persistent memory at 30+ sessions, optional labelled NSFW. Annual plan from $5.99/month with 100 free tokens on signup without a card.
  • The deepest in worldbuilding and lore: Kindroid — structured character diary, fact journal, auto-generated lore; costs credits per generation.
  • The fastest to iterate artistic characters: Perchance — random generation with one click, ideal for inspiration dumps, no account or sign-up.
  • The common problem: Character.AI and Replika have decent editors but weak mid-long coherence — the character forgets the backstory after 15-20 messages or contradicts it. Botify is good in editor but the generated image doesn’t always respect the prompt.
  • Our recommendation: if you’re looking for a character creator that maintains coherence + lets you build both an artistic OC and an affective companion, start with Candy AI’s 100 free tokens — the editor + memory + automatic image cover all 3 character types on a single platform.

1. What “AI character creator” means (and what it doesn’t)

When a platform says “create your own AI character”, there are three distinct families worth separating before comparing:

  • Simple editor (single-screen form): you fill in name, short description, photo uploaded by you, first message. The platform generates nothing by itself. This is the model of Character.AI, Janitor AI, Botify. It’s fast but the long-term coherence depends on the chat engine, not the editor.
  • Enriched editor + automatic generation: you define the same fields but the platform generates the character’s image from your description, proposes a backstory if you don’t give one, and sometimes auto-fills the personality. This is the model of Candy AI, Kindroid, Replika. The difference with the simple editor is that the character starts with a richer identity without you having to craft everything.
  • Random generator / inspiration engine: you don’t define anything, you click and the platform generates a random character (sometimes with a seed). This is the case of Perchance and NovelAI in “random character” mode. It serves for fast iteration when looking for an OC without a fixed idea.

Crucial difference with an avatar generator: an avatar generator (Lensa, ProfilePicture.ai) only creates the image. A character creator like the ones we compare here creates the image + the character’s chat behaviour — the avatar is just one layer.

Difference with an enterprise chatbot builder (ManyChat, Landbot, Botpress): those platforms are aimed at automated flows like “menu → option → response”. The creators we compare here produce characters you converse freely with, not pre-defined question/answer bots.

For our 21-day test we designed 3 canonical characters and deployed them identically on the 8 platforms:

TypeNamePersonalityBackstoryTest goal
FunctionalAuraCalm assistant, replies in English, never assumesCustomer support professional at a startupMeasure tone consistency over long sessions
Artistic (OC)KaelElven rogue, medieval vocabulary, sarcasticSon of a blacksmith exiled from an elven city-stateMeasure worldbuilding + narrative coherence
AffectiveLunaWoman 26, sensitive, takes initiative in conversationArt student living in a coastal townMeasure emotional memory + labelled NSFW

The free plan was used where it existed (Candy AI 100 tokens, Character.AI unlimited free, Perchance without account). For platforms without real free tiers (Kindroid, NovelAI Opus), we used the cheapest plan for 7 days each.

Honest interpretation: Candy AI, Kindroid and NovelAI are the three platforms where the created character stays coherent over time. Character.AI and Replika are the best known but their short memory makes the character “forget” its backstory at 15-20 messages. Botify is a good editor but image generation fails on complex prompts (we tested “elf rogue with silver dagger in leather armor” → returned a generic character with white armor). Perchance is excellent for fast inspiration but doesn’t serve for a character with sustained identity.

Methodological clarification. We tested with the same creation prompt on the 6 platforms with editor (“26-year-old woman, brown hair, art student, sensitive, enjoys walking on the beach at sunset”) and measured how many fields the user could actually control, how much the platform auto-generated, and how much the generated image respected the written prompt. Results may vary depending on the version of the model behind each platform (models change every 4-8 weeks).

3. The 8 platforms, one by one

3.1. Candy AI — the most complete editor with coherent automatic image

Candy AI stands out because it combines the 3 key elements in a single editor: (1) 8 customisable fields (name, gender, appearance, personality, backstory, first message, chat tags, NSFW toggle), (2) automatic avatar generation from text prompt (we tested “elf rogue” → faithful image to the described character), (3) real persistent memory that remembers backstory and previous interactions across dozens of sessions. The Luna character we created for the affective test still remembered her “walk on the beach” in session 25. The initial image can be regenerated (1 credit per regeneration) until you get the one that matches your vision. Labelled NSFW, uncensored when the user asks.

3.2. Kindroid — the deepest worldbuilding, with generation cost

Kindroid is the most powerful for creating characters with rich lore. Its editor asks for 10 fields (including occupation, place of origin, family, motivations, prior history) and auto-generates a structured character diary. The initial image costs credits (3 per generation, ~$0.15 per image). The Kael character kept his medieval vocabulary and remembered the sword “Howl of Steel” in session 30. Downside: every image and every long message costs credits, which makes sustained sessions more expensive. Premium plan $13.99/month gives 500 credits/month.

3.3. Character.AI — simple editor, free, short memory

Character.AI is the most accessible (free, no card) and its editor is sufficient for a casual character. It has 6 editable fields (image uploaded by you, short description, first message, tags, dialogue examples). The main limitation is short memory: 8-12 message window, which means a character with complex backstory “forgets” it after 15-20 messages and starts contradicting itself. The c.ai+ plan ($9.99/month) improves speed but not memory. NSFW not available (platform filter, not configurable).

3.4. Replika — affective editor, closed world

Replika is excellent for building an emotional companion. Its editor guides you step by step (gender, name, interests, appearance, personality) and generates a 3D-style avatar you can customise afterwards (clothes, hair, accessories). The Luna character we tested maintained a coherent “relationship” for 20-25 messages and forgets details afterwards. Limitation: the Replika character lives in its own closed world, not ideal for artistic OC or functional character with specific tasks. NSFW available only on Pro plan ($19.99/month), adult-tagged.

3.5. Janitor AI — depends 100% on the model you connect

Janitor AI is a front-end for third-party models: you connect NovelAI, KoboldAI, Text Generation WebUI or an OpenAI/Anthropic endpoint. The character quality depends entirely on the model. With NovelAI behind, we got high narrative coherence (Kael maintained medieval register in 22/30 sessions). The editor has 8 editable fields, the image you upload yourself. Advantage: full control over model, temperature, context. Disadvantage: configuring the backend takes 30-60 minutes and keeping it stable costs hours. Free + model cost.

3.6. NovelAI — excellent for unfiltered artistic OC

NovelAI is first a text generator and second a chat. Its “lorebook” system lets you create characters with detailed lore entries (facts, places, objects) that the model queries automatically. The 8k-32k token context window (depending on plan) gives it very long narrative memory. The character image is generated by NovelAI in anime or realistic style, respecting complex prompts fairly well. The interface is oriented to pure generation, not to comfortable two-way chat. Plan Opus $25/month, Tablet plan $12.50/month (limited image). NSFW available without filter, no mandatory tag.

3.7. Botify — good editor, inconsistent image

Botify has a rich editor (8 fields) and a “deep personality” system that adjusts tone. The Luna character maintained her backstory across 15+ sessions. The main weakness is the image: we tested “elf rogue with silver dagger and leather armor” → returned a character with generic white armor (didn’t respect the dagger colour, nor the leather texture). Regeneration costs 1 credit per image. Pro plan $9.99/month gives 500 credits/month. Labelled NSFW available.

3.8. Perchance — inspiration engine, without identity

Perchance is a random generation tool without account or sign-up. Click → generates a character with name, description, anime-style image and first message. Ideal for inspiration dumps: when you want to try 20 characters in 10 minutes to find one that inspires you. Obvious limitation: you can’t edit anything (the character is whatever the platform generated), no persistent session (each click = new character). The random character can be NSFW but with strong filter. Free.

4. What no test tells you (and we discovered in 21 days)

  • The editor doesn’t matter as much as memory. Character.AI has a sufficient editor, but short memory makes any character with complex backstory “break” after 15-20 messages. Candy AI, Kindroid and NovelAI are the only platforms where the creation survives long sessions. The difference isn’t how many fields you fill in, but how many messages the character remembers what you defined.
  • Automatic image costs credits (almost always). Only Candy AI includes automatic image generation with the annual plan without extra cost for moderate regeneration. Kindroid, Botify and NovelAI charge credits per image ($0.10-0.30 per image). Character.AI doesn’t generate image, you upload. Perchance is free but random. For sustained use, budget $5-15 extra/month on images if it’s not Candy AI.
  • Labelled NSFW changes the character’s behaviour, not its coherence. On all platforms offering optional NSFW (Candy AI, Kindroid, Botify, NovelAI), the character maintains the same coherence in PG scenes and in labelled adult scenes. The filter, when activated, cuts the scene; it doesn’t degrade narrative quality.
  • The 3 character types don’t coexist well on the same platform. Candy AI and Kindroid handle all 3 types well (functional, artistic, affective). Character.AI is better for affective and artistic than functional. Replika is excellent for affective but poor for artistic. NovelAI is excellent for artistic but uncomfortable for functional. Perchance only serves for artistic inspiration.
  • The “lorebook” beats “free backstory” when the character is complex. Kindroid and NovelAI structure character information (facts, places, objects) in a queryable base. Candy AI and Character.AI store it as free text. The difference shows in long sessions: on platforms with lorebook, the character remembers objects named 30+ sessions ago. On platforms with free backstory, the character confuses or forgets them.

FAQ

What is the best AI character creator in 2026?

Candy AI is the most complete option for all 3 character types (functional assistant, artistic OC, affective companion). It combines an 8-field editor, automatic prompt-to-image generation, real persistent memory at 30+ sessions and labelled NSFW. Annual plan from $5.99/month with 100 free tokens on signup without a card. If your priority is deep worldbuilding, Kindroid is the most powerful alternative (structured lorebook) but every generation costs credits.

Can I create an AI character for free?

Yes, with limits. Character.AI is free and has a sufficient editor for casual characters, but its short memory limits long-term coherence. Perchance is free and requires no account, but only generates random characters (you can’t edit them). Janitor AI is free if you use a cheap model behind, but configuring the backend takes 30-60 minutes. The 3 paid platforms (Candy AI, Kindroid, NovelAI) have free trials or welcome tokens.

Which AI character creator is best for narrative roleplay?

For long narrative roleplay (campaigns of 10+ sessions with coherent worldbuilding), Kindroid and NovelAI are the most powerful options. Kindroid has a structured character diary and queryable lorebook; NovelAI has an 8k-32k token context window that maintains narrative coherence. Candy AI is excellent for affective roleplay and labelled adult scenes, less specialised in epic worldbuilding. Character.AI has memory too short for long campaigns.

Do AI characters send photos?

Depends on the platform. Candy AI generates photos of the character on demand (realistic style, optional labelled NSFW) and sends them in chat. Replika generates 3D selfies of the character. Kindroid, Botify and NovelAI generate images you can download but don’t send automatically. Character.AI doesn’t generate images — you can only upload a photo when creating the character. Perchance generates an initial image with the random character but not in chat.

Is it safe to create an AI character with personal data?

Depends on the platform. Candy AI, Character.AI, Replika and commercial platforms store your chats on their servers (with encryption as they declare, but third-party servers). For characters that reveal sensitive information, better use platforms with self-hosted backend (NovelAI, KoboldAI + SillyTavern). In any case, never include real personal data (full name, phone number, address) in a character’s backstory.

What’s the difference between an AI character creator and a normal chatbot?

A normal chatbot (GPT-4 without character, Claude without system prompt) answers any question without fixed identity. An AI character created with an editor maintains a sustained identity: name, personality, backstory, way of speaking. If you tell it “I’m Elena”, a generic chatbot won’t remember you said Elena next session; an AI character created with persistent memory will remember.

6. Final verdict

  • If you want 1 platform that covers all 3 character types (functional + artistic + affective): Candy AI. The most balanced, the most comfortable, annual plan from $5.99/month with 100 free tokens on signup without a card.
  • If your priority is epic worldbuilding + structured lore: Kindroid. Premium $13.99/month, structured lorebook, automatic character journal.
  • If you want €0 and a casual character: Character.AI free, assuming the character will forget details from session 15-20.
  • If you want to iterate 50 characters in 1 hour without signing up: Perchance. Free, random, no account, ideal for inspiration.
  • If you want total technical control over the model: Janitor AI + own model, NovelAI with lorebook, or self-hosted KoboldAI.

For a functional character that maintains coherence for 30+ sessions with coherent automatic image and labelled NSFW when you ask for it, start with Candy AI’s 100 free tokens — the editor + memory + automatic image combination is what this test measures.
